LifeStyler: Dex R. Jones

Dex R. Jones

Working in Entertainment, you come across many that are in it for a plethora of reasons. Some work for the connections, some just for the money and recognition, then you'll find others that really enjoy taking a great picture. Meeting New York based photographer, Dex R. Jones and later discovering his genuine love for the art and it's true purpose, only intrigued me to pry a bit deeper into his genius behavior.

RW: Who or/and what inspires you as a LifeStyler?
DRJ: Of course I can't ignore the fact that I'm an artist and so I'd have to say my artistry greatly inspires my way of life. Most people know about my broad taste and intense love for music from visiting my blog but most people aren't aware of my interest in film.  In fact, most days when I'm not shooting or working on the details of a photo series, I'm probably watching a couple of films.  Music and film greatly effect the way that I relate to the world and people and thus how I live my life.

RW: Who are your icons?
DRJ: (laughs) There are way too many.  I'll just make a short list.
Bob Marley, Ghandi, Malcolm X, Sidney Poitier, Basquiat, Nina Simone, Fela Kuti, Kwame Toure... just to name a few.

RW: What have they taught you?
DRJ: [In reference to Dave Chappelle and Jean-Michel Basquiat]  I'm always very much inspired by the lives and stories of young up and coming artists that have surpassed any expectations they could have had for themselves.  Truly talented people who are dedicated to their craft and have figured out their passion at a very early age.  Their struggle... their story is something I find myself easily relating to.

RW: Favorite place to be?
DRJ: Once upon a time, I loved just being in Williamsburg.  I could be anywhere as long as it's with good people, I'm happy to be there.  I'm not a club-goer though and never was (laughs). But I'm mostly a solitary dude and so I'm usually behind my laptop most days.

RW: Food you can't go a day without? (include junk food if that'ts your thing).
DRJ: I hate food questions, man (laughs). I just eat anything and everything!  I'm not picky at all.  Mexican, Italian, Indian, Soul.... I like it all.  I drink beverages all day though.  Love Peardrax and can never get enough Goya Mango Nectar.

RW: If you had to describe those "little things that make such a big difference" what would it be?
DRJ: Composition in photography is BIG for me. Its the difference between a great photograph and an alright one and is something I recommend all aspiring photographers consider when shooting.

RW: 3 things that shape how your life is lived.
DRJ: My relationship with my family.  My family is very traditional and my choice of living to them has always been strange.  Thats not always the easiest to deal with.

My poetic past is probably one of the most influential and life changing experiences of my life thus far.  Poetry helped me to learn just how important the social responsibility of art is to the world.  I learned my history and my value under the veil of poetry.

I don't have the money/resources to do all the things I would like to do artistically but I'm pretty much known for making the best of the "worst". I pride myself on it . My work has never been compromised because of it and quite honestly I've probably gained more respect by shooting in the simple way that I do. Sometimes less is more.

RW: When you're not working, you are (doing what with your free time)?
DRJ: I'll probably watch 4- 5 movies on any day that I have an extensive amount of free time. lol Im a movie junkie.  My girl also thinks Im a comic Geek.  I don't with argue with that (laughs). I've found a new appreciation for comic books that pretty much just came out of nowhere.  But I'm hooked now.  There are moments when I just don't wanna think about editing another photograph, the internet gets sickening and I have nothing else to do.  I just find myself needing a comic book to read.  It's just something I escape into, I guess.  I guess I'm one of those corny geeks all the jocks make fun of now.  lol It's cool though.  I'm used to it.

RW: Comics? Really? Which ones are your favorite?
DRJ: Well... the Black Panther character was what really introduced me to reading comic books.  I love that character.  An African king of the world's most powerful and advanced nation.  No super powers.  Just supreme intellect, a strong spiritual center, and unmatched wisdom.  And he kicks ass too! (laughs)  I've branched out to other graphic novels as well like, Watchmen and Kingdom Come.  Those are some great stories.  I think a lot of people underestimate the quality of writing and conceptualism you can find in comic books.

RW: What is it that you want people to see when the see your work?
DRJ: I want my work to be a window to someone's story.  I want just one of my photographs to sum up a novel or a screenplay.  You look into it and your mind's eye is already at work creating a background story about what it sees.  I love for my work to tell stories.  I really don't care what the story is.  Just say something of significance and feeling.

RW: How do you plan on changing the world?
DRJ: I don't know if thats my business to know. I'm just trying to get more free.  I've learned from personal experience that trying to figure out how I'm supposed to change the world is detrimental to my health.  Im just letting my feet guide me.  Assuming my responsibility as an artist that has a large enough following is the best I can do at this point.

RW: Where are you in 5-10 years?
DRJ: Married with kids maybe living in New Zealand or something (laughs). Im just trying to be comfortable, published and happy.  I plan to do a lot of traveling.

RW: Any random info you'd like people to know?
DRJ: Without getting too preachy, I'll just say patience is a virtue; especially to a struggling artist.  If you're really any good at what you do, all you need is a hell of a lot of drive, passion and patience.  Keep one eye open. - Sergio Wonder

Terrible Fixation.

If you haven't heard about Taj Melendez and his accessories, I think it's time you do yourself a favor. Melendez has made it a point to dedicate his creative thoughts and time to designing and constructing a diverse range of brooches for all the trendsetters who stomp the block. I've been in love ever since I've come across his statement pieces and I don't plan on turning back any time soon.

Ring Me Up!

Not only do I love that they've mastered Lady Gaga's "Telephone"... but I'm really into the very fact that they all look amazing. The best one is sitting at the piano.

"The Dollies" by Curtis Brant

The League [of Extraordinary Gentlemen] had a full day last week with [model] twins Sasha and Sable Boykin. Of course, if you plan to spend the day with photographer Curtis Bryant, and Editor James Fields, you're definitely expecting a great time. It's safe to say that I'm looking forward to the next photoshoot.

Black or White....

There's something about Adrienne Raquel's perspective of the world that makes me want to breathe again. Even though we've recently just met each other, I feel like she knows my heart all too well. This only makes me anxious to see what she thinks of next.

Make Your Mark!

Runway Wonderland's own, Seneca and I recently returned from a well deserved trip to Miami, Fl and had a blast gallivanting around the city. One of our many stops were at The Mondrian which I believe serves the best drinks in the vicinity. But their definitely not known for their mixes, but the ambiance of the building's interior.

Minks and Minx

So I have come to the conclusion that the perfect compliment to a fresh Mink coat this fall is a set of manicured Minx nails. I had the pleasure to get my Minx applied by manicure goddess Michina Koide she has manicured your top celebs to my favorite super model Chanel Iman. With so many styles to choose from I went for the Metallic gold set with a leopard exotic twist. My paws have defintely been show stoppers ever since. Take a glance while the light hits them just about right and they will blind you (so serious). You can take Vain to another level and even check yourself out in them :-) Check out Michina's portfolio here

I Have Life!

This has got to be one of the coolest tattoos I've seen as of late. I'm not sure if its just because I'm head over heels for Mario and his super abilities... but thanks to photographer, Tony Lee... I'm inspired to live a much greater life of spontaneity.

LifeStyler Report: Ashley Leblanc

Name: Ashley LeBlanc
Claim to fame : Founder of LeBlanc Inc. Entrepreneur at Heart for ART
Location: DMV

Who/What ispires you?
I am inspired by daily things most people take for granted. I enjoy dark color but bright impressions. God is who I gain a multitude of my inspiration from. The things He puts within my eyes view is what I draw inspiration from. People and their different personalities give me joy in knowing God created that being. Life is beautiful, rarely accepted for what it is. It uniquely inspires me.

Your Style Icon?
I normally don't use the word icon. I prefer to say my personal muse. If I were living in the 1970s my muse would be Gia Carangi because her style was always on edge as was her life. I have much love for Agyness Deyn because she would be the evolved form of the previous muse. She is very effortless and beautiful.

What stands out in your bedroom/kitchen/Living Room?
In my bedroom I'd have to say my enormous amounts of magazines, newspapers and media on my window seat. I have been collecting them for years now. In my kitchen I believe the pink tea kettle my mother purchased for my grandmother some time back stands out the most. As for my living room my grandmothers old school television that has numbers you can use to dial out on the remote. It kind of creeped me out at first.

So you like to collect magazines, What are your favorites at the moment?
My favorites are Nylon, Elle UK, Vogue UK and Harper's Bazaar UK. I've always been a fan of style and fashion not within the United States. Each night I go to Barnes and Noble's and I pick up a hand basket; grab these magazines and gain tons of inspiration.

Ideal place to eat?
I am a lover of Italian food. I normally do Luigi's in DC (get the cal zone or the tortellini) or Ledo's (wherever I can find one) and I normally get a nice pasta with a Caesar salad and cranberry juice. Once I turn 21 I will try red wine with my food.

Ideal vacation?
I could see myself on the sand at a beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Having a nice daiquiri and snacking on chips and salsa. Maybe a few gatherings with other people and sleeping my nights away on a canvas bed at a resort smelling the air of freshly made empanadas.

You would never be caught dead in..... ?
Anything considered hip hop fashion i.e Baby Phat , Phat Farm, Sean John or any of those brands you find in 'hoodtiques' as I call them. I am not fond of labels, brands or too much materialistic crap, though I do enjoy Lanvin and Gareth Pugh. I don't want to be caught dead in something that doesn't have proper history.

What's more important... bag or shoes? Why?
Shoes are the most important. I believe shoes make a person's unique persona and style stand out. You can wear a trash bag dress and a really nice pair of Oxfords or even a pair of pumps by Marc Jacobs or Salvatore Ferragamo. The thing is shoes cannot be too simple when paired with a simple look. The condition of your shoes allows people to know how well you feel, how mad you feel or how you take care of yourself. Shoes are key.

Favorite pair of shoes in your wardrobe?
I currently own loafers, oxfords and boots. My favorites at present time are my brown loafers. They are very comfortable and I can wear them with a lot of looks. This year I plan to switch. My next pair of favorite shoes will be something by either Lanvin or Burberry.

What will you be rockin' this Spring?
This Spring I am thinking more ecclectic things like, plastic, leather and many other things people don't normally wear. I will most likely do more heels, more skirts, dresses and my hair should be longer. So I will have great hats and possibly no shaded frames for Spring. Designers I am looking forward to wearing are mainly underground. I will do some mainstream gear from Lanvin, YSL, Polo Rugby, Burberry Prorsum and TopShop. I already have most of this look planned out. You will see as I upload more photos to my Lookbook account.

What chapter of your life are we reading right now?
Right now you all are reading the chapter of progression in my life. During the first 20 years of my life there was a hell of a struggle with my identity, finances and many other things. I am coming up on my 21st year next month and I can finally say I've found my inner. For the longest time I despised things like fashion. Then I realized I was always there just not physically. This new year is all about progression for myself and my team. As an individual I have a lot to attain in 2010 which includes all out hustle and bustle. Which I know will return great blessings to myself. This Progression chapter is my baby right now; I need to nurture and handle it with care. Any mishaps and I can be back to the first 20 years of my life. Keep watching me and stop watching tv.

Who's been played a million times on your iPod?
Oh wow, I just updated my iPod. Jade of HGFC New York has been playing in my iPod for weeks now. The " Its My Heart, Cookie" EP has been in full circulation. My favorites are "He Needs Me" and "Beautiful Problems". Her voice is very beautiful. I'd like to see her live one day. Very jazz mixed with neo-soul. Her voice is definitely one to hear. Makes you think of
L. O. V. E

Ideal Life (where are you in 5-10 years)
Within the next 5-10 years I plan to have traveled the world twice, opened 3 LeBlancLeBlanc Inc. headquarters, made thousands of people happier and I should be just about to settle down and raise my family. I plan to be as much of a success as God allows me to be. I know with this progression I am doing now it will pay off in due time. The struggle only lasts just as long as the success. And may God Bless this woman to have her own soon. So I can spread love, happiness and prosperity to all.

Oh... It's You!

I was having a specific moment with my identity and this was the result. I will yet again state that smoking cigarettes is incredibly unhealthy and will not only cause death, but difficulties to all normal bodily functions.

It might be my obsession with Super Mario, or it could just be the fact that musician, Zack Kim is just terrifically talented. Whatever it might me... i just know that I need to get this "soundtrack" onto my iPod ASAP!

Air I Breathe

Even though I sometimes bash those who participate in the act of public displays of affection... I happen to be a firm believer in Love and Fate. Yesterday I had a meeting with young icon and entreprenuer, Ashley Leblanc that simply set my soul to an inspirational flame. To complete the entourage were photographers Anthony Paige and Curtis Bryant, innovators Devohn Walker, Tyreak, Sweets, Kamyll Edwards, and Jonathan Mejia. I'm not yet able to say what's about to happen next... but I assure you that it's going to be phenomenal!

Rock My World

I think that there might be a reason to why I gravitate to certain people. Aspiring fashion journalist and friend, Nekala Alexander has sure got the attitude and eye that it takes to succeed in such an image-hungry industry. If you're still wondering what this post is about... I think it's pretty clear that I'm head over heels (no pun intended) over this shot. If we're lucky, we might see Alexander join the Runway Wonderland family in the new year.

No-Name Hobo.

Photographer, Curtis Bryant has recently been working on a new concept centered around the prep-culture that has dominated our society of youth. Using muses Kaysy Gotay, Jillisa Stewart, Cedel Washington, and myself, he's mastered capturing the very representation of what a modern preppy is. With that being said, I'm elated that Bryant even considered be to apart of his vision. Too see more of this story, click here.
